Feasibility & Planning
Know what’s possible before the project gets too far down the road.
Projection, mapping and screen projects are often shaped by decisions made early, sometimes before anyone has checked whether the idea is technically practical.
pixel.formation helps assess the creative idea, site, surface, screen system and technical requirements before budgets, designs or expectations get locked in.
We help you understand what will work, what might be risky and what needs to be planned properly.
Button: Plan a project
A good technical plan saves pain onsite.
A lot of screen and projection problems start long before the gear arrives.
The projector position might not work. The screen size might be unrealistic. The content resolution might not match the surface. The ambient light might be too high. The rigging position might compromise the image. The control workflow might be too complex for the show.
These problems are usually solvable, but they are much easier to deal with early.
We help production teams, agencies, designers and creative leads turn the idea into something that can actually be delivered.
What We Look At
The practical details that shape the result.
Every project is different, but we usually assess a mix of creative, site and technical requirements.
Site & Surface
We look at the physical space, projection surface, screen position, scenic design, audience sightlines and any restrictions that might affect the result.
Brightness & Ambient Light
We assess whether the proposed projection or screen system has enough brightness for the environment, especially for outdoor, dusk, indoor-lit or camera-facing projects.
Throw Distance & Lensing
We check whether the available projector positions can achieve the required image size, angle and coverage.
Content Resolution & Templates
We help define the content canvas, pixel map, aspect ratio, delivery specs and template requirements before content production begins.
Media Server & Playback Workflow
We plan the playback system, outputs, inputs, cueing, control, backup workflows and operator requirements.
Signal Flow & Control
We consider routing, switching, capture, networking, show control, OSC, DMX, sACN, Companion, TouchOSC and other control requirements.
Risk & Redundancy
We identify where the project needs backup systems, extra prep, additional rehearsal time or a simpler technical approach.
When To Bring Us In
Early is best, but not always possible.
We can help at any stage, but the best results usually come when we are involved before the major decisions are locked.
That might be during:
Pitch development
Creative treatment
Budget planning
Site inspection
Technical design
Content planning
Pre-production
Supplier quoting
Rehearsal planning
Show programming
Even a short review early in the process can help avoid expensive changes later.
How We Help
Clear technical thinking before the build begins.
Creative Feasibility Review
We review the creative idea and flag any obvious technical issues, risks or assumptions.
Site Review
We assess photos, drawings, elevations, plans or site visit information to understand what is practical.
System Planning
We recommend the type of system required — projection, LED, media server, capture, routing, control and backup.
Technical Direction
We help bridge the gap between creative, production, suppliers, content teams and onsite crew.
Content Specification
We provide clear content requirements so designers and animators are building to the correct format from the start.
Budget Reality Check
We help identify whether the proposed outcome matches the available budget and where compromises may be needed.
Delivery Plan
We outline what needs to happen before site, during install, through rehearsals and across show operation.
Common Questions We Help Answer
Can this actually work?
Can we project onto this building?
How many projectors will we need?
Will it be bright enough?
Can the projector go there?
What resolution should the content be?
Can this scenic object be mapped?
Can we run this from disguise or LightAct?
Can we trigger it from lighting, audio, timecode or an iPad?
Can we include live cameras?
How much rehearsal time do we need?
What happens if something fails?
Is the budget realistic for the idea?
Useful Inputs
Send whatever you already have.
You do not need a complete brief to start the process. We can work from rough information and build the detail from there.
Useful things to send include:
